Tripletail grow to at least 35 pounds, a powerful fish with extra thrust from his three "tails." This is a pelagic fish that arrives inshore each spring, as sargassum weed moves closer to the beach. Tripletail assume a passive, waiting game, imitating a floating piece of debris, but strike very quickly when baitfish or crabs pass within reach. These fish love structure and shade, even the meager shade offered by a floating crabtrap buoy during summer in deeper bays. Fish pictured was at a small gas platform off Louisiana, in 25 feet of water.
