Several species of saltwater trout exist, notaby the weakfish in northern Atlantic states, down as far as norther Florida in winter. The seatrout is popular in Florida and throughout the Gulf Coast. The sand trout is smaller and without spots, living in shallow bays. The "gulf trout" may be a different trout species, preferring offshore waters in the Gulf of Mexico, and growing to perhaps six pounds. During autumn, gulf trout can be caught on multi-hook rigs with cut bait, around production platforms in 30 or 40 feet of water.
